Just in time for the holidays, here’s a handy return policies summary!
The Miami Herald has summarized the in-store and online return policies for Wal-Mart, Target, Sears, J.C. Penney, Best Buy, Circuit City, Toys “R” Us, Bed Bath & Beyond, Costco, The Sports Authority, and Barnes & Noble.
As for MY return policies, here’s how I deal with gifts I give:
• I always ask for a gift receipt. If one is available, I enclose it with the gift.
• I resist the urge to say anything about returning gifts I spent time picking out. If the gift receipt is there, ’nuff said.
• If a gift receipt isn’t available, I keep the original sales receipt. I try to get a feel for whether or not it’s something they like – if it’s clothing, for instance, I encourage them to try it on. If it seems like they are not sure about it, I pull them aside later and just tell them where I got the gift. Most stores will allow an exchange without a receipt. If it flat-out doesn’t fit or they hate it, I offer to give them the original sales slip.
Returning gifts after the holidays is an unfortunate reality. But keeping a few things in mind can make it easier for your friend or family to get exactly what they need or want.
